Summary of the scientific report

The STSM subject concerned the application of data mining techniques to the analysis of e-commerce data. The supervisor of the STSM was prof. Stefano Rovetta, an associate professor of computer science at DIBRIS (Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and Systems Engineering) at the University of Genoa in Italy, an expert in research on machine learning (ML) and clustering techniques for high-dimensional data analysis.
The workplan of STSM was successfully realized. At the beginning of the visit Grażyna Suchacka presented the seminar entitled “Web usage mining in e-commerce environment” at DIBRIS. The visit was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and expertise and to lay foundations for the scientific cooperation of dr. Suchacka with the research staff of DIBRIS. As regards the scientific collaboration, first the structure of the available Web traffic data and possible machine learning techniques to be applied to the data analysis were discussed. An idea of a novel method for clustering user sessions in a Web store to identify groups of users with similar behavioral patterns was proposed. Research questions were formulated and some machine learning methods were selected for use. The data was preprocessed and analyzed using some of the selected ML methods.
Tangible results of the STSM can be summarized into a development of a new approach for bot recognition at the e-commerce Web server, preparing a draft paper to be submitted to the journal and proposing a research plan for future common work.
Despite the limited period of time, the visit allowed to establish the collaboration between the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Opole University, Poland and DIBRIS, University of Genoa, Italy.

Personal notes

My research visit at DIBRIS and my stay in Genoa were perfectly organized by prof. Stefano Rovetta. The possibility to collaborate with him and other researchers from the machine learning group at DIBRIS was a great experience for me. I would like to thank prof. Stefano Rovetta and prof. Francesco Masulli for their hospitality and the time they dedicated to me during my visit.
